Kilimanjaro

6 DAY UMBWE ROUTE

Your Dream Climb Starts Here

Overview

The Umbwe Route is Kilimanjaro’s steepest and most direct trail. It’s short, intense, and best for experienced trekkers who can handle fast altitude gain. The route begins in dense rainforest, climbs sharply along ridges, and joins the Machame Route at Barranco. From there, it follows the southern circuit through Karanga and Barafu before the final push to Uhuru Peak. It’s challenging but unforgettable.

A well-presented driver will be at Kilimanjaro International Airport for pick up and followed by a one-hour drive to your hotel/lodge in Moshi town. Your guide will be coming at your place where you stay for pre-climb briefing and gear check.

Elevation: 1,800 m to 2,850 m / 5,905 ft to 9,350 ft

Distance: 11 km / 6.8 mi

Hiking Time: 5–7 hours

Habitat: Rainforest

Description:

After breakfast, you drive to Umbwe Gate and sign in. The trail starts steep and stays steep—this is the most direct route up Kilimanjaro. You hike through thick rainforest with tangled roots, mossy rocks, and birds calling overhead. It’s a tough climb, but the forest is alive and beautiful. You reach Umbwe Cave Camp by late afternoon, tucked deep in the trees.

Elevation: 2,850 m to 3,950 m / 9,350 ft to 12,959 ft

Distance: 6 km / 3.7 mi

Hiking Time: 5–6 hours

Habitat: Moorland

Description:

You leave the forest and enter the moorland zone. The trail climbs sharply along a ridge with dramatic views of valleys below. The trees thin out, replaced by giant heathers and volcanic rock. You’ll feel the altitude today, but the scenery is wild and raw. Barranco Camp sits beneath towering cliffs and strange plants—it’s one of the most stunning spots on the mountain.

Elevation: 3,950 m to 3,995 m / 12,959 ft to 13,106 ft

Distance: 5 km / 3.1 mi

Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

Habitat: Alpine Desert

Description:

You start by climbing the Barranco Wall—a steep scramble that’s safe and fun with guides. At the top, the views are epic. You continue through ridges and valleys with glaciers in the distance. It’s a shorter day, giving you time to rest and hydrate. Karanga Camp is a good acclimatization stop.

Elevation: 3,995 m to 4,673 m / 13,106 ft to 15,331 ft

Distance: 4 km / 2.5 mi

Hiking Time: 3–4 hours

Habitat: Alpine Desert

Description:

You climb slowly to Barafu Camp, your final stop before the summit. The trail is rocky and exposed, with strong winds and wide views. You’ll arrive early, eat dinner, and rest as much as you can. Tonight is short—your summit push begins around midnight. Get ready, tomorrow you stand on the Roof of Africa.

Elevation: 4,673 m to 5,895 m to 3,068 m / 15,331 ft to 19,341 ft to 10,065 ft

Distance: 17 km / 10.6 mi

Hiking Time: 12–14 hours

Habitat: Arctic to Rainforest

Description:

You wake in the dark and begin the final climb with headlamps. It’s cold and steep, but you move slowly and steadily. At sunrise, you reach Uhuru Peak—the highest point in Africa. You celebrate, take photos, and feel proud. Then you descend all the way to Mweka Camp for a well-earned rest.

Elevation: 3,068 m to 1,640 m / 10,065 ft to 5,380 ft

Distance: 10 km / 6.2 mi

Hiking Time: 3–4 hours

Habitat: Arctic to Rainforest

Description:

Your final day takes you through lush rainforest, alive with birdsong and fresh mountain air. The trail is soft underfoot, and the descent is gentle. At Mweka Gate, you’ll sign out and receive your summit certificate. A short drive returns you to Moshi, where a hot shower, cold drink, and celebration dinner await.
